mothlighting is a piece that grew out of The Voice of the Sibyl, for which I researched and used live moths. I have begun hosting community mothlightings; people are invited to come sit with me at a lit white sheet of fabric with a moth-attracting light, and watch what visits. The events typically last about the same length of time as a movie, shifting the experience of the audience to one of observation and attention rather than narration. Similar to the movies, the content is full of romance, mystery, and death. Unlike the movies, the audience is invited to talk to one another, point out what they notice, and share stories of their lives as the drama unfolds.
I am also raising a number of moth species for use in further works, exploring the role of invisible labor and care.
