R. Armstrong is an artist and writer currently enjoying a fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. A deep connection to literature and history informs a practice encompassing everything from textual works to architecturally immersive audio-video installations. Previous residencies include the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the Vermont Studio Center, and as a WritingLive fellow at Performa09. Work has recently been shown in the UK, Germany, Belgium, and the States, including the solo shows if you have a body when you get here at The Ocean/The Waves Gallery in New York and Du/e Corps/e nella Groundless Ground at the Pajama Factory in Pennsylvania. Phrasebook for the Unrequited Country, a poetry manuscript, was shortlisted for both the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets and the Beatrice Hawley Award from Alice James Books; poems from the manuscript have appeared or are forthcoming in various literary journals including American Poetry Review, Agni (online), and Post Road.
